While You’re In Town

Our Favorites

A random assortment of places we love.

  • Phoenix Jazz Club – The Phoenix is an amazing little jazz club in one of the oldest buildings downtown. Great jazz every night along with good drinks. You’ll feel like you’ve just stepped back into history.
  • Loose Park – By far the most beautiful park in KCMO. It’s perfect for a picnic and Grace loves the wide open fields. There’s also a walking/jogging trail that circles the park.
  • AMC Mainstreet 6 – We do love our movies. Previously known as the Empire Theatre, the building has been renovated to an AMC movie theatre. You can see a movie in the regular theatre or upgrade to the Cinema Suites to experience the gloriously comfy recliners and in-movie full menu and bar service. It is also right next to the Power & Light District where you’ll find more than 50 restaurants, bars and shops.
  • Zoo Bar – This is the dive bar of all dive bars right in the heart of downtown KC. Not for the faint of hearts. It is a true hole-in-the-wall with customer graffiti covering every inch of the place. The drinks are simple and cheap. So order up a Schlitz, but be sure to bring cash. It’s a cash only bar.
  • As soon as I think of more I’ll keep adding. Stay tuned!

BBQ

Kansas City is well-known for its Bar-B-Que.  Some places you might want to check out:

  • Oklahoma Joe’s – Jamie and Scott’s favorite. Located inside a gas station. Try the Z-Man or the chicken.
  • Jack Stack – More formal BBQ dining. While the BBQ is great, the sides are better. Try the beans or cheesy corn bake.
  • Arthur Bryant’s – Grandfather of KC’s BBQ tradition. Try the ribs.
  • Gates’s – CAN I HELP YOU? Our most prolific local BBQ chain.
